Batiks are produced by applying wax to the fabric in the areas that are to remain undyed. When the fabric is inserted into the dye, the dye takes to the unwaxed areas. Often a brittle wax is used which cracks during the dying process allowing the dye in, resulting in the characteristic thin lines.
